Grey Dawn (2011) |

For Marimba Choir (SSATB)
Gray Dawn was commissioned by Zachary McCoy in the Spring of 2011 for the 7AM Marimba Choir at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
I based the work off of a poem of the same name that I wrote earlier that year:

I based the work off of a poem of the same name that I wrote earlier that year:
Black. This mountain has never seen
Before a night like this. This chill, this terror That Devils surely spawned… ‘Tis always darkest before the Dawn The woods themselves seem frightened Of the grumbling gods of the sky Whose quakes rattle the leaves: bones strewn across the earth Whose queer ashen grey makes brazen tree trunks Prison bars to all lost in their thicket. ‘Tis always darkest before the Dawn |
but then I looked skyward!
What light beyond the mountain breaks? Sol, that slow golden Goliath With an unexpected silent roar, parts away the clouded vapors Like a fiery savior It eradicates the sky Until all that is left is Bright Entwined with the emerald leaves In all their glorious splendor Awakened upon the golden thrones of Trees With morning came salvation For a place strangled by the night Ensnared by its own fear But Light brought back Life Let it do the same in us. |

NOTE: Midi rendition is for strings due to poor audio quality of midi marimbas.
