Conversial Hairbows (2011)
|
|
For clarinet quartet (3 Bb's + 1 bass).
I. Aqua Blue II. Purple Groove III. Pink Identity IV. Burning Red
Commissioned and dedicated to the Four Stikx Clarinet Quarteta
PROGRAM NOTES:
The name “Conversial Hairbows” derives from the performance attire of the Four Stikx Clarinet Quarteta (different colored converse shoes with matching hairbows) as well as the idiom of conversation between ensemble members and the audience. Each movement of the work is titled after the different colors of converse shoes and hairbows in the quarteta's attire.
Since I have a connection to each of the members of the quarteta, I wanted to convey to the audience through the piece how each of the individuals in the ensemble hold a unique identity that is unchanging and separate from everyone else in the group. By creating four unique movements to the work, I could make an representation of the individuality of the four players. At the same time I wanted to show the bonds of friendship and connection that the players in Four Stikx have toward each other by making every clarinet in the ensemble “converse” with one another through all four movements.
In the end, I feel that “Conversial Hairbows” symbolizes as a whole how each of us can retain our individuality and our unique identity while uniting with others to fulfill our common goals and overcome any obstacles that are set before us.
