For Pandeiro Duet
Out of Socket is an experiment in which I desired to take the Brazilian Pandeiro, an instrument that is used typically in a traditional or stylistic setting, to uncharted territory. Typically, the Pandeiro is almost always associated with most of the popular traditional styles of music in Brazil, especially Samba, Samba Pagodge, Samba Batucadas, Choro, and Capoiera. It has also found its way into modern Brazilian funk and rock thanks to the efforts of master Brazilian pandeiro players like Marcos Suzano. However, in all of these styles, the pandeiro typically plays a standard pattern with ornamentation. With this composition, I wanted to incorporate many different elements not found in traditional pandeiro playing such as imitative techniques from the concert tambourine, mixed meter, and broken patterns between the two players. My goal with this piece is to make traditional pandiero players think out of the box of standard patterns to showcase the versatility of this amazing instrument. In a way, with this piece, I am putting the pandeiro out of place, or out of socket, with its traditional roots.
