For Marching Front Ensemble (4 Marimbas, 2 Vibes, Xylo/Glock, 2 Racks, 2 Synths)
Written for the 2017 AT Front Ensemble based in Clarksville, TN. Premiered at the 2017 WGI Open Class Finals in Dayton, OH.
Drawing upon inspiration from AT's 2017 show, "Victor" which tells the tale of Dr. Frankenstein up to the creation of his monster, I devised this lot tune to be a sort of prequel to their show.
In this piece, the "Dies Irie" and several quotes from J.S. Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" are blended to create a cohesive work. Frankenstein is represented by Bach's fugue, which emulates the complexity, elegance, and darkness that composes the mad scientist's persona. In addition, this work is frequently referenced throughout pop culture to represent the corrupt, insane, or malevolent making it all the more appropriate for Dr. Frankenstein. His monster and the horrific ideals it is represented by are heard throughout the work through the Dies Irie. I desired to have a work set the stage and foreshadow the tragic events of Frankenstein through musical implication.
There are two versions of this piece. The original version is designed to feature the lead synth player, while the second version replaces this synth feature for a rack feature. I am also happy to make alterations to this piece to better suit your ensemble. Please contact me for more details.
